Two days in Zhangjiajie, without the backtracking

Two days works here on one condition: that you do not walk back the way you came. The park is built around lifts that go up one side and down another, and a route that ignores that geometry spends its second day repeating its first.

This is the version that assumes you are sleeping in Wulingyuan and want the famous pillars rather than the longest possible walk.

What the two days cost in tickets

That admission is valid for four consecutive days, so a two-day visit buys it once. The lifts are one-way fares, charged per ride, and the route below uses each of them once — up by one, down by the other.

Day 1 — Yuanjiajie and Tianzi Mountain

Enter at the eastern gate, Wujiayu, the closest one to Wulingyuan town. From inside, the shuttle network does the work.

Morning. Shuttle to the foot of the Bailong Elevator and ride it up. This is the lift built into the cliff face — about half of its travel is inside a shaft cut through the rock and the rest is on an external frame bolted to the wall, which is the half you can see out of. It takes under two minutes and replaces a climb that used to eat most of a day.

At the top you are at Yuanjiajie: the First Bridge Under Heaven, the viewpoints over the pillar field, and the column officially renamed after the film that made this landscape famous outside China. Walk the loop.

Afternoon. Shuttle from Yuanjiajie towards Wulongzhai and He Long Park, which puts you on the Tianzi Mountain ridge — a different angle on the same sea of pillars, and generally a quieter one.

Late afternoon. Come down by the Tianzi Mountain cable car rather than walking back to the elevator, and take the shuttle from its lower station back to the gate. Up one way, down another, no repetition.

Day 2 — the valley floor

The first day is spent above the pillars. The second is best spent among them.

Golden Whip Stream runs along the valley between the cliffs and is walked rather than ridden — no ticket beyond your admission, no queue, and the only part of the park where the scale registers from below rather than above.

Ten-Mile Gallery is the other half of the day. You can walk it, or take the tram, which is a separate fare in each direction:

If you would rather have a second high viewpoint than a valley walk, Huangshizhai is the alternative — the plateau reached by its own cable car from near the South Gate. It is a fine day. It is also a third lift fare and a transfer across the park, which is why it is the option rather than the plan.

The cheaper version of day 1

There is a genuine way to see Tianzi Mountain, Yangjiajie and Yuanjiajie without paying for any lift at all. Enter by the northern gate at Tianzishan, where the park shuttle reaches all three directly. The scenic area’s own transport page points this out.

What it saves is the two one-way fares above — CN¥65 and CN¥72 — plus both queues.

What it costs is access. The northern gate is much further out, and the bus to it runs from the city bus station rather than from Wulingyuan:

So it is a real option if you are starting from Zhangjiajie city, and an awkward one if you are staying at the park. It is also the option nobody mentions, which is why it is here.

What two days leaves out

Tianmen Mountain, above Zhangjiajie city, with its own cable car and the cave that gives the mountain its name. The Grand Canyon and its glass bridge, which are in a different county entirely and are not covered by the park ticket. Huanglong Cave and Baofeng Lake, both inside Wulingyuan and both charged separately.

Any one of those is a third day. If you have it, take it — the three-day route shows how it fits.

Where you sleep decides how much of each morning you spend in transit; on this route it should be Wulingyuan.
