Privacy

The short version

This site has no accounts, no login, no comment box, no newsletter and no forms of any kind. There is nothing here for you to fill in, so there is nothing about you for us to store.

We set no cookies of our own. Google Analytics is connected and does set its own, and that is the one thing on this site that watches how the pages are used. The rest of this page explains exactly what it records and what it does not.

What stays in your browser

If you switch the site between light and dark, that choice is saved in your browser’s local storage under the name zjp-theme. Local storage is not a cookie: it is never attached to a request and never leaves your device. Clearing your browser’s site data removes it.

That is the only thing this site writes to your browser.

What our hosting provider sees

The site is served as static files by Cloudflare Pages. Like every web host, Cloudflare processes the technical details of each request — the address it came from, the page requested, the browser’s user-agent string — in order to deliver the page and to protect the service from abuse. That processing is Cloudflare’s, it happens whoever is running the site, and it is described in Cloudflare’s own privacy documentation.

We do not receive those logs and cannot look anything up in them.

Measurement

This site uses Google Analytics. It records that a page was viewed, and it records when a booking link is clicked.

What those click events contain describes the page, not the person: which language version you were reading, which page and topic cluster it belonged to, which booking platform the link pointed to, where on the page the button sat, and whether the screen was phone, tablet or desktop sized. That list exists so we can tell which sections of the guide are worth writing more of. None of it identifies you, and none of it is combined with anything that would.

Google Analytics sets its own cookies and processes what it collects on Google’s terms, not ours. We see only the aggregated reports.

Readers in the EU and the UK should know that this site does not yet ask for consent before that happens. A consent mechanism is required there, and it is not built. Until it is, the site is not open to search engines and is not being promoted to readers in those regions. If you would rather not be measured at all, any browser-level tracker blocking stops it, and we do not attempt to work around it.

Booking links

Some links on this site go to travel booking platforms — the boxed booking cards, never the ordinary links in the text. Which links, and why, is set out in the affiliate disclosure.

When you follow one of those links you leave this site. The platform you arrive at will typically set a cookie recording that you came from here, so that a booking made in the following days is credited to us. That cookie is set by the platform, on the platform’s domain, under the platform’s privacy policy — we cannot read it, and it does not exist until you click.

What comes back to us is a commission statement counting bookings. It carries no names, no addresses and no payment details, and there is no route by which a booking could be traced back to an individual reader on this side.

Booking links carry the attributes browsers use to keep the destination isolated from the page it was opened from, and the attributes search engines use to identify a paid link.

What we never do

We do not sell or share data, because there is none to sell. We do not build profiles, run advertising networks, embed social media widgets, load third-party fonts, or fingerprint your device. We do not redirect you to a language version based on where your address appears to be — the language you get is the one in the address you asked for, and the switcher is in the header.

Children

This is a travel guide for people planning their own trips. It is not aimed at children and collects nothing from anyone, of any age.

Your rights, and the honest limit on them

Under the GDPR and comparable laws you have rights of access, correction, deletion, restriction, objection and portability over personal data held about you. We cannot usefully exercise any of them, for the reason above: we hold no personal data, so there is no record to produce, correct or erase.

Where a third party does hold something — Cloudflare’s request logs, a booking platform’s cookie, Google’s analytics data once it is switched on — the request has to go to them, because they are the ones holding it.

The date at the bottom of this page is when it was last revised. Anything that changes what is actually collected — connecting analytics, in particular — is reflected here before it goes live, not after.
